4 Key Questions Before Selecting An Intercom System
The right intercom has to fit your entrances, the people who answer the calls, and the systems it needs to work with.
01
Can we keep our existing intercoms?
Door stations, answering stations and wiring may still have life in them.

02
Audio only, or video too?
Video lets staff see who is calling before they answer or release a door.

03
Should the intercom open the door?
An intercom that releases a lock has to work with the door hardware and access control on that opening.

04
Who answers after hours?
A call that rings at an empty front desk helps no one.

What an intercom system covers
Communication Where Your Facility Needs It
Intercoms belong to JMG's Protect people solutions: who gets in, and how people call for help. They work alongside visitor management, emergency communications and identity management.
01
Door And Lobby Entry
Visitors call from the entrance, and staff answer and release the door.
02
Video Intercoms
A camera at the door station lets staff see the caller before they answer.
03
Gate And Parking Entry
Drivers call from a vehicle gate or garage entrance to be let in.
04
Emergency Call Stations
Direct-connect help points at stairwells, parking levels and remote areas.
05
Two-Way Audio With Video
An operator can speak directly to a person on camera in real time.
06
Paging And Emergency Communications
Intercoms, two-way radios, paging and help points coordinated as one system.
Call to entry
How An Intercom Call Works
The exact flow depends on where calls ring, who may release each door, and what the intercom is connected to.
Call
A Caller Presses The Button
At a door station, a vehicle gate or an emergency call station.
Identify
Staff See And Hear The Caller
A video intercom shows who is at the entrance before anyone answers.
Answer
The Call Reaches The Right Person
A reception desk, a security office or another answering point, as the system is set up.
Release
The Door Opens, Or Help Is Sent
Staff release the lock for an approved visitor, or send help to an emergency call.
Record
The Event Can Be Reviewed
Where the intercom is connected to access control or video, the call and the door release can be reviewed later.

What A Commercial Intercom System Does?
The basics, how an intercom connects to the rest of your security, and where emergency call stations fit.
What Is A Commercial Intercom System?
A commercial intercom system is two-way communication between an entrance, gate or help point and the people inside who answer it. A caller presses a button on a door station; staff answer at a desk station, phone or app, speak with the caller and, when the intercom is wired to the lock or to access control, release the door. Video intercoms add a camera, so staff see the caller first. Unlike a doorbell, a commercial system is built for many entrances, several answering points and shared buildings.
Intercoms, Access Control And Video
An intercom is most useful when it works with the rest of a building's security: the call, the camera view and the door release in one place. JMG SECURITY SYSTEMS integrates security systems using Genetec Security Center, which brings access control, video surveillance, license plate recognition, communications, intrusion detection and analytics together in one location. See access control systems and security integration.
Emergency Call Stations And Help Points
In parking structures, on campuses and across large sites, an emergency call station gives anyone a direct line to help. For parking facilities, JMG SECURITY SYSTEMS designs emergency call stations with direct-connect help points at stairwells, levels and remote areas, and it integrates help points and intercoms for one-touch access to assistance. See secure parking and emergency communications.
Compare intercom options
Standalone Intercom Vs. An Integrated Intercom System
A standalone intercom lets someone talk to a visitor. An integrated system also ties that call to the door, the cameras and the record of who was let in.
Decision factor
Standalone intercom
Integrated intercom system
Releasing the door
A separate button or relay for each door
Released through access control, by door and schedule
Seeing the caller
Voice only, or a separate monitor
Caller video alongside the building's cameras
Multiple entrances
Separate units and answering stations
Entrances and answering points on one system
After-hours calls
Ring at an empty front desk
Routed to another answering point
Record of who was let in
Usually none
Call and door events can be reviewed
Adding entrances
Difficult to scale consistently
Add stations to the same platform
